Herpes Dating in California
Whether you live in Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose or anywhere else in California, you are far from alone. Nationally, about 1 in 8 people aged 14 to 49 have HSV-2 and nearly half have HSV-1, according to the CDC. Here is how HSV singles in California meet, where to get tested, and what California law says about telling a partner.
Where HSV singles in California meet
Herpes dating apps. On a herpes dating app such as Kind, everyone already shares the same starting point, so there is nothing to disclose. Kind is available across California: set your distance to see members near Los Angeles or wherever you are. Kind is new, so the community near you may still be small, and it grows every week.
Mainstream apps. Tinder, Hinge and Bumble have the most people in California, and you choose when to tell a match. Our free disclosure message builder helps you find the words.
Support groups. Groups are not dating services, but they are a real way to meet people with HSV and build confidence. Our herpes support groups guide explains where to find them, online and in person.
Wherever you meet people, stay alert to scams: never send money to someone you have not met, and be careful if someone pushes to move the chat to WhatsApp or Telegram. Here are the red flags to watch for.
Getting tested and treated in California
The California Department of Public Health points residents to the CDC's GetTested finder for testing locations. Start with the state's own page: Office of STIs and HCV (California Department of Public Health).
Planned Parenthood health centers in California offer STI testing and treatment, and the CDC's GetTested tool finds free and low-cost testing by ZIP code.
Most people with herpes have no symptoms or only mild ones. If you want to know your status, ask for a type-specific blood test; our herpes testing guide explains the options. For managing outbreaks and lowering the risk to partners, see our guide to antivirals.
What California law says about STD disclosure
California law can apply to STDs such as herpes, but only when someone acts with the specific intent to transmit.
California law makes it a misdemeanor to transmit, or try to transmit, an infectious or communicable disease (which includes STDs) when the person knows they have it and acts with the specific intent to transmit it. A person who takes practical steps to prevent transmission, such as using a condom, is not considered to have that intent.

Whatever the law says, CDC guidance is to tell partners before you start a sexual relationship. It is also the foundation of trust. Our herpes disclosure guide covers when and how.
